GRANT THOMAS

ELITE SQUAD TEAM MANAGER & HEAD COACH

Grant Thomas or “GT” as he is known is the head of our elite squad division. GT has been surf coaching for over 15 years and during this time he competed at an international level on the World Longboard Tour for 10 years.

With numerous finals appearances throughout Europe and Australasia he was only outside the top 16 by the end of year tally twice. In that time received a highest placing of 7th. Being a great surfer is only a small part of becoming a good coach and Grant has worked tirelessly over the past 8 years at improving his coaching skills.

Grant has coached Sunshine Coast and Queensland teams to their respective titles and along the way has shared success with surfer’s personal efforts to be crowned Queensland and Australian Champions. Through these coaching experiences Grant has been working with top level coaches Phil McNamara (Mick Fanning’s Coach), Garry Cruckshank (Senior Coach at Surfing Australia’s HPC) and Ian Portingale to name a few. Over the past 5 years Grant has also led event commentary for both Surfing QLD and Surfing Australia. Through this commentary Grant is able to “keep his finger on the pulse” as to what directions the sport is heading.

It has been during these times that Grant has created his passion to assist in the ever increasing level of performance surfing on the Sunshine Coast. Grant is also the owner of Maroochy Surf School where he has a fantastic team of instructors who are all a part of the development process.

In grant’s words “Although it is imperative to spend the time to develop the elite in our sport, we must remember that they all come from one of our local beaches. My aim here at the OPC is not to rival Surfing Australia’s HPC. But to give Sunshine Coast surfers the opportunity to have a hub on the Coast where they can all train and push each other’s performance level in and out of the water. As all those involved know the HPC is pivotal in the selection of all of our National Teams.”

“What we are aiming to do is act as a pathway and in turn help get our local surfers to that level. The OPC will also be of huge benefits to the intermediate and beginner surfers as it has programmes to suit all levels and gives the budding surfer an opportunity to have a go at what the sports elite are doing to achieve their goals.”
